I will be voting yes on 14 October 2023.
With the poor outcomes in well-being that our First Nation people face compared to Australians as a whole, particularly in remote areas, it is important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be involved in all programs affecting them. This will ensure that the best strategies are made to help them and that, in turn, will improve outcomes.
Being empowered is the strongest way to achieve long-term goals and this is what a Yes vote to the referendum offers Aboriginal people and is why I am voting in the affirmative.
Despite my personal view, and whatever the result, I believe that the debate around the pros and cons of the referendum have made the Australian people more aware of the issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait people.
I am certain that this debate will encourage all Australians to insist on changes to the laws and policies of our nation to improve First Nation people’s lives.
